Introduction: AI in Scholarly Publishing
AI has dramatically transformed the face of academic publishing with new innovations, thereby helping in streamlining research, editorial, and publishing processes for scholars, editors, and publishers. These include the applications of AI, particularly through chatbots and LLMs, for enhancing the quality of work-from information retrieval to peer review [1]. Its implementation does not go without some ethical and practical concerns and demands well-defined parameters for responsible application.
Applications of AI in Academic Publishing
AI tools have transformed traditional publishing workflows, providing support in numerous areas [1] (Table 1) [2].
Table 1: Applications of AI in Scholarly Publishing
| Area | AI Applications |
| Research Assistance | Literature search, summarization, and citation management |
| Content Creation | Abstract writing, image generation, and manuscript drafting |
| Quality Control | Language editing, formatting, and image resolution checks |
| Editorial Workflow | Target journal selection, peer review, and statistical checks |
| Ethical Oversight | Plagiarism detection and identification of paper mills |
Strengths of AI Tools
- Efficiency: Automates repetitive tasks, freeing up time for researchers and editors [3].
- Accuracy: Enhances language editing and statistical analysis.
Global Access: Assists non-native English speakers in producing high-quality manuscripts.
Misconceptions About Salami-Slicing
- Concerns May Be Overstated
- Longer Studies are More Cited: Research suggests that studies in biomedical journals are getting longer and receive more citations than shorter studies.
- Increased Number of Scientists, Not Publication Rates: The rise in publications may result from a growing number of researchers rather than an increase in individual output [1]. [7]
- Co-Author Contributions
- Dividing total output by the number of co-authors indicates a decrease in individual contributions over time.
Limitations of AI Tools
Despite their benefits, AI tools come with significant limitations [1]:
Challenges in Ethical AI Usage
- Plagiarism and Fabrication: AI may generate content with inaccurate references or plagiarized material [1].
- Transparency: Lack of clear disclosure regarding AI-generated content [6].
- Bias in Outputs: Risks of perpetuating subjective or systemic biases [7].
