Global and Indian Trends in Melanoma and Nonmelanoma Cancers: Epidemiology and Therapeutic Perspectives

Skin cancer is a major global health problem and is divided into two types which are melanoma and non-melanoma skin cancer (NMSC). Melanoma is a type of cancer that is more aggressive compared to other types whereas BCC and SCC are the common types of NMSCs. Increasing cases of skin cancer all over the world have been linked to high exposure to UV radiations, aging, changes in lifestyles and proper diagnosis. Though the prevalence rate of skin cancer is low in India, there has been an increase in cases, hence the need for awareness, early diagnosis and management of the condition.

Journal selection is important when publishing articles on skin cancer and case reports. Authors must ensure that the selected journal is appropriate considering its scope, relevance and indexing among others. A good case report should cover the patient’s history, clinical presentation, diagnosis, treatment and follow up while ensuring patient confidentiality and getting informed consent. Patient education is very important in skin cancer management. Being aware of the measures one needs to take to protect themselves from UV rays, doing self-check on skin for any changes and seeking help from dermatologists will go a long way.
