Neutrophil cathepsin G and risk of cardiovascular events in patients with diabetes mellitus

Graphical Abstract Sample Work

Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) has many complications associated with increased risk of atherosclerosis and cardiovascular events (CVEs), including increased platelet activity and inflammation. Cathepsin G (CatG) is a prothrombotic proteolytic enzyme released by neutrophils, which could act as a possible mediator in this process by stimulating the aggregation of platelets. To date, there have been no studies looking specifically at the relationship between CatG levels and the development of CVEs; therefore, the goal of this study is to determine if circulating levels of CatG can independently predict the future occurrence of CVEs among patients with T2DM.
