A Meta-Analysis, Efficacy of Health Interventions in Children and Adolescents with Chronic illnesses

For children with common chronic medical conditions, evaluate the effects of a parent- and family-based psychological treatment on parent and family outcomes (the main target) and child outcomes (secondary aim). MEDLINE, EMBASE, and PsycINFO were searched beginning in April 2013. In all, 37 randomized controlled trials were conducted. The effectiveness of the evidence was evaluated using GRADE guidelines. Data on the parent, family, and kid results were obtained. The combined psychological interventions positively affected parent behaviour at posttreatment and follow-up, but no appreciable changes were noted in the other outcome categories. Problem-solving therapy (PST) improved parents’ mental health and behaviour after treatment and follow-up. For some outcome domains, there were insufficient data to evaluate cognitive-behavioural and system therapies. Parent- and family-based psychological treatment, with PST showing particular potential, can assist parents in getting better outcomes. Future research should incorporate consensus statements for outcome evaluation, multisite recruitment, and active comparator conditions.

Only studies with psychological therapy as an intervention are included in this study.

A psychological intervention was defined as one that (1) used psychological techniques from the behavioural family systems theoretical model, such as cognitive behavioural, problem-solving, and systems approaches, and (2) was intended to alter the attitudes and behaviours of parents and other family members to improve parent and child outcomes. The following standards were satisfied: (1) The major objective of the intervention was to alter the parents’ or families’ beliefs, behaviors, or psychological well-being. (2) The length of the parents’ treatment (i.e., the number of sessions) was at least half that of the kid. As comparisons, the typical course of treatment, attention control, and wait-list control were all employed.
