The Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE) is an international organization associated with research integrity and best practices in publication ethics. Established in 1997, it has offered guidance and resources to editors, publishers, institutions, and researchers with a variety of resources, case studies, and policies that exemplify best practices in the academic research publishing industry. For academic authors and journals, COPE is a valuable resource to support research integrity and responsible peer review processes.
COPE is a non-profit membership organization dedicated to enhancing the ethical standards of scholarly publishing. COPE offers consultative support to editors and publishers dealing with ethical breaches such as plagiarism, data fabrication, duplicate publication, authorship disputes, and conflicts of interest. COPE currently has over 13,000 members in total, and its reach extends across all publishing types and all major research disciplines.
COPE offers a variety of guidance to its members and the larger academic community:
Core Practices | Fundamental principles that journals and publishers must follow, including ethical oversight, transparency of authorship, and post-publication discussion. |
Flowcharts | Visual decision trees, helpful to editors and publishers in dealing with issues such as plagiarism, redundant publication, and reviewer misconduct. |
Discussion Documents | In-depth investigations of developing ethical issues, such as preprints, whistleblowing, and data sharing |
Case Database | A searchable record of “real” ethical issues resolved per COPE’s principles. |
Guidance Documents | These include broad topics, such as how to handle allegations made anonymously, how to have peer review systems, and authorship. |
A prototypical case dealt with by COPE would be concerning a suspected duplicate submission. An editor receives a manuscript that closely aligns with a published article by the same authors. The editor uses the COPE flowchart on redundant publication, contacts the authors for clarification, verifies publication dates, checks COPE guidance before rejecting the manuscript, and contacts the authors’ institution if misconduct is confirmed.
At Pubrica, we apply COPE’s ethical standards to all our academic services: from manuscript editing and referee support to journal selection and publication consultancy. Our editorial specialists work with authors to comply with COPE guidelines and thus minimize the risk of manuscript rejections or disputes over ethics.
Adherence to COPE guidelines is essential for ensuring ethical integrity in academic publishing. COPE is the global standard for publication ethics and provides a structured format for editors, publishers, and authors to follow when facing complex ethical issues. For researchers, following COPE’s principles will protect their work and aid in a smoother peer review and publication process.
