Introducing the Journal of the Academy of Public Health: A New Era in Scientific Publishing

In a major milestone for the public health research community, the RealClearFoundation announced the launch of the Journal of the Academy of Public Health (JAPH) on February 5, 2025. This groundbreaking, open-access journal plans to change the way scientific publishing is done by incorporating transparency, inclusion, and academic freedom into public health conversations (1).
Founders and Editorial Leadership
Jason, author of Dr. Bhattacharya’s illustrious statement, co-founded JAPH with Dr. Jay Bhattacharya, Stanford University, and Dr. Martin Kulldorff, formerly of Harvard University. Their purpose was expressed in Dr. Kulldorff’s first paper, “The Rise and Fall of Scientific Journals and a Way Forward,” in which he challenged traditional models of publishing and called for a more open and accountable model (1,2).
The journal is led by co-Editors-in-Chief Dr. Kulldorff and Dr. Andrew Noymer of UC Irvine. The editorial board includes some of the most distinguished public health scholars, such as Dr. Sunetra Gupta of Oxford, Dr. John Ioannidis of Stanford, Dr. Peter Gøtzsche from the University of Copenhagen, and Dr. Bhattacharya, who is on leave from the journal (1).
Core Principles: The Four Pillars
The journal, JAPH, has four defining principles that seek to improve the integrity and access of scientific research:(1).
| Open Access | All articles are available in the public domain at no cost, removing barriers for access and therefore helping to publicize knowledge more widely. |
| Open Peer Review | Peer reviews are published with articles, with the reviewer’s name as a marker for accountability and transparency in the review process. |
| Reviewer Recognition | Reviewers are offered payments and public acknowledgment for their contributions to encourage rigor and consideration in their critiques. |
| Elimination of Gatekeeping | The journal actively attempts to eliminate editorial ‘gatekeeping’, allowing distinguished scientists to publish their research workflow quickly, along with their peer reviews. |
These principles represent the journal’s ethos surrounding intellectual accountability, viewpoint diversity, and fair editorial practices while providing an indirect challenge to traditional scientific publishing (1).
Inaugural Issue and Content
The first issue of JAPH presents peer-reviewed research articles, essays about the state of global public health, and an expansive and observational review of vaccine literature. The diversity of content presented in this issue reflects the journal’s commitment to supporting open dialogue and academic freedom in public health research.
Controversies and Criticisms
JAPH has been criticized for its approach by several people in the scientific community, who have raised concerns that the journal might open the door for the publication of work that undermines the established public health consensus. Given that the founders of JAPH were involved with the Great Barrington Declaration, which called for herd immunity during COVID-19, critics haven’t necessarily been quiet about their concerns. They worry that publishing work that is unsupportive of consensus may weaken scientific consensus and public trust in health initiatives (3,4).
