Quality of Reporting of Meta-analyses

The use of meta-analyses in the practice of evidence-based medicine has grown in favour. A standardized meta-analysis platform known as the Quality of Reporting of Meta-analyses (QUROM) declaration was developed to address poor reporting. It included a flow chart and a checklist with 21 tables. The checklist included extensive instructions about how to organize the article into:

Title – including term meta-analysis or systematic review

Abstract – objectives, data sources, review methods, results and conclusions

Introduction – Clearly explaining the clinical problem and justifying the choice

Methods – information sources, inclusion and exclusion criteria, validity evaluation, data abstraction, study design and features, methods of data synthesis

Results – trial flow chart, descriptive data for each trial, quantitative data synthesis

Discussion – Recapitulates important findings with clinical implications and possible biases and futuristic applications

The PRISMA Statement replaced the QUORUM Statement in 2009. (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-Analyses). This 27-point checklist elaborated on the structure and data properties in an effort to better standardize reporting. Information on registration and procedure, financial or non-financial assistance, conflicts of interest, publicly available data, code, and other resources were also included in the checklist.
