Uses of Case Reports in Medical Literature

The case report is a recognized publishing technique in the medical literature and is defined by the NCI lexicon as “a complete record of the diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up of an individual patient.” It is an observational, descriptive technique for carefully logging impartial findings, and it must contain details on the patient’s sociodemographics, medical history, diagnosis, prognosis, past and ongoing therapies, results of investigations, and guidelines for management.

Case reports can be published on unusual observations, a surprising connection between a disease or symptom, an unexpected event while studying or treating a patient, data that reveals the likely pathogenesis of an adverse effect, a rare disease trait, an unusual combination of symptoms that makes diagnosis difficult, extraordinary therapeutic approaches, anatomical variations, a new theory proposal, a question about an existing theory, novel manifestation,

Aside from serving as a teaching tool, case reports are an excellent approach to spreading knowledge regarding atypical clinical syndromes, illness relationships, various treatment side effects, and therapeutic responses. They are simple to obtain and comprehend and don’t have statistical validity, which is a drawback.
